Merida

The White City

Known as "The White City", Merida is a first-class cultural tourist destination. It has many fine examples of colonial architecture, most notably the 16th-century cathedral.

We encourage you to take a carriage ride along the beautiful Paseo Montejo, where you will see a variety of architectural styles represented in the lovely mansions of French, Italian and Spanish-Moorish design. While riding along Paseo Montejo you will come to the Monumento a la Patria, depicting the history of Mexico. At night, you will find Merida fascinating with its cafés, excellent restaurants, lively nightlife, concerts and serenades.

Be sure to spend time in the Zócalo (main square), called the Plaza de la Independencia, where you can find lively musical performances and crafts vendors.

Merida has several museums worth seeing, namely, the Museum of Popular Art and The Cantón Palace (Anthropology and History). Your sightseeing should include the Cathedral, the Casa de Montejo and the Government Palace. From Merida it is easy to access the Mayan archaeological sites Chichen Itza and Uxmal.
