Ixtapa is one of the most modern resorts on Mexico's west coast. Born in the 1970s, the area has an ecology-minded master plan that requires the allotment of half the land as an ecological reserve.
Ixtapa's variety of hotels includes one of Mexico's most intriguing collections of deluxe properties, each one distinct in atmosphere. A variety of water sports are available in Ixtapa, along Playa del Palmar and La Ropa beach with parasailing, waterskiing, wave runners, banana boat rides and more. There are two 18-hole championship courses in Ixtapa, and the beaches are excellent for relaxing horseback rides.
By night, most discos, clubs and superior bars can be found in the Hotel Zone or in the Marina area. Restaurants range from simple beach eateries to fine dining establishments. Regional seafood favorites include tiritas (fish strips), and pescadillas (fish tacos).
Just a few minutes south of Ixtapa lies Zihuatanejo, a small, unique village located on a wonderful bay where "tranquilo" is the way of life.
