If Mario-Angel seems to have an usually good understanding of the diverse cultural history and many attractions of the Mexican Caribbean, he received great training for his current job. Mario went to college in Hawaii, and worked as a tour guide at the Polynesian Cultural Center, helping visitors experience the eight island villages and exhibits explaining seven Polynesian cultures.
Diaz also earned a bachelors degree in intercultural studies and communications at the Hawaii campus of Brigham Young University.
Mario joined IVI Destination Management in July 2006, and already is making a positive impact on a wide variety of IVI services and events.
In his leisure time, Mario – like Barack Obama, the new president of the United States -- really enjoys basketball. If you don’t see him at a basketball court, you might find him hanging out at the beach.
Personal Favorites
Local Attraction: Catamaran cruises to Isla Mujeres are outstanding, almost no matter which one you choose. The fresh sea air, and turquoise blue of the waters between Cancun and Isla Mujeres, are simply incomparable
Recreational Activity- One of my favorite places is Xel-Ha. Certainly is has many recreational activities, but is also is an excellent ecological experience. It makes me think more about our wonderful planet Earth, and how fortunate we are that some of its perfect offerings are still here.
Favorite Restaurant- Cenacolo is the best authentic Italian restaurant in southeastern Mexico. It’s elegant, with stained glass ceiling panels and live piano music, and they make traditional breads and pastas as you watch. Great wines. Don’t miss the degustation menu. It’s outstanding. And there’s a reason for the small green hats.
Local Tour- Mayan Encounter conducted by Alltournative (Chimuch o Pachcen) is a very complete tour. No matter how much you already know about the Maya, you always learn something new during this ecological and cultural encounter.
Local Event: Don’t miss the Jazz Festival in Playa del Carmen. It’s held every year in November, normally over two or three nights. It may not be the destination’s signature event, but it is very good, and becoming more and more popular.
